Author Topic: Webm embedding  (Read 986 times)

Is there any way to do it? Webms are so much more space efficient than gifs. I recently attempted to post a gif on the forums and the 600x800mb version was 1.5x larger than the 1920x1080 webm (that had sound).

Another benefit is that webms don't have to auto-play, meaning you wouldn't even be loading them if you had seen it before

Oh and also large photos with large amounts of one color (black night sky, white backgrounds) also have smaller file sizes

Also 600x800 res not mb lol

i don't think that SMF would support that

yeah SMF doesn't support it (at least not on this old version)

the forum could easily support it if you write a plugin for it (or use one that already exists, and I'm sure there are several)
however, it's kinda pointless. you should link to large files instead of embedding them in the first place

Siren stated that the webm version of a gif was smaller in file size, and I believe with my past experiences with them they tend to be.
It'd actually make sense to add a webm plugin.

if webm's have sound then you could easily post screamers/other really loving annoying things that you don't want to hear

they usually are, outside of special cases like gifs that are already tiny. but they're not so much smaller that it's now reasonable to embed them instead of linking to them
using webm is nice for sites like imgur or whatever looking to save bandwidth when people are already planning to look at them in the first place. but anything larger than like 1MB should be linked to on a forum

You normally have to click play to watch the webm, and it would be just as easy as linking a youtube link to a screamer.

Couldn't someone just make a userscript to embed it into the page?

i prefer gifs over webms as they actually work on my phone, and don't require you tapping on them, and then waiting 10 seconds for it to play.
