The most cost effective way to get rid of ransomware is to buy a new storage device
Might be possible to boot from an OS Installation disc,  then format.

If you really know what you're doing and if it's possible, this is better

The best way to protect yourself from ransomware is to not download stupid stuff

also regular backups to an external drive esp for important stuff

like for me thats my bl folder

idk common sense doesn't always save you from malware
last year, wikia sites got redirected to a russian research site for like an hour
i had about 3 tabs open on wikia that were already fully loaded and they all got redirected

It's the kind of thing I used to do on Windows 98.
Don't know if it's possible with modern Ransomware.

I suppose that could really forget you over yeah, but don't you have to run an executable for ransomware to even work?

Not necessarily. It depends on how it was packaged.

unfortunately the worst viruses dont involve running things, just downloading an infected file. you wont get prompted anything either.

i think the prompt you get by windows when it says an executable is not trusted is an attempt to prevent these behind-the-scenes executions

There are also drive by ones where you can get infected simply by going to the website

These are the kinds that you really need to worry about. It's the main reason why I always run ad blockers, because I haven't seen a single advertising site that actually cares enough to filter out any potentially malicious adverts, including Google.

The drive-bys exploit flaws in your browser in order to automatically infect your computer without downloading any executable file. It's really bad.

Although if a large website like that got hacked and injected with ransomware then a solution/patch WILL be made to save face. It's impossible for the average coder to make fixes for these obscure individual ransomware viruses but with enough money behind it a fix would be made.

No, it's actually impossible. The 'fix' is to find the private key used to encrypt all your files. Unless they invent high-efficiency quantum computers to save face, you can't do it.
