Ransomware /is/ terrifying, assuming you don't have a backup, there's nothing anyone else in the world can do to get your stuff back after it's been encrypted.

Fortunately, the people who distribute ransomware do decrypt your files if you send them cash. Apparently they have really friendly customer service staff running 24/7 as well. Still awful criminals but at least there's a way out if really important stuff gets held hostage.

I'm hesitant to believe this; I don't see why internet criminals like them wouldn't just take your money and run.

because their "business" model relies on people trusting them to decrypt the files

and if they dont then nobody will pay up cause whats the point

Because then why would anyone pay their ransom? People would just realize that a ransomware infection means no more files and move on with their lives. By actually holding up their part of the deal, it becomes worthwhile for victims to pay the ransom.

Also, what good would it do them to 'run' rather than give you back your files? Nothing on your computer is probably of value to them.

most of the time people get a new computer, let the computer gather dust and when a decryptor comes out, they dl it and decrypt every file on that computer

happened to cryptolocker and it's probably bound to happen again at some point

decrypters dont come out unless the ransomware creator does somehing stupid

UFO has the hardest lunatic mode from what I hear, but goddamn do you get lucky by only having to do 0.2 billion points

This, if it's done correctly it's literally impossible to decrypt them unfortunately.

Have fun waiting for someone to come out with a decryption algorithm for 2048-bit RSA. See you in 2098.

The most cost effective way to get rid of ransomware is to buy a new storage device
