What I am speaking of cannot be HL1 because to the extent of my knowledge I have never seen a HL1 Episode So i must be talking about Half Life 2 Episode 1.

yes, The episodes can be used in place of the origional. Now stop being weird and buy your own damn game. It is just not right that you gone and played HL2: EP 1&2 before HL2.

I'm not sure if L4D comes with the SDK base - try going into tools and see if you can download Source SDK Base - You need that to play sourcemods.
