Author Topic: star treck online  (Read 4065 times)

It is, free space to explore, create your own race, command online clan ships with your friends, have space battles, and ground battles, hopefully more than 10 planets to visit to  :D

:O   what if when you create your own race the computer creates your own home world.
They have geared the character creation to allow mixture of races to fit your need for "new races" Ie, green skinned ferengi eared vulcans. or so the latest article I read on it stated in the Star Trek Magazine.

Looks good, but the chances of getting a bunch of people to be crew on your ship seems unlikely. Since everyone is going to want to pilot their very own ship. And if friendly fire is on, probably if you have people you don't know in your crew, then they are going to commit mutiny and kill you for your the control of the ship. And then ram it into some Planet, Star, Ship, Black Hole, or something else.

But other than that, it'd be fun to go explore planets. :D
Everyone will be able to captain their own, ship, but the whole "get a crew" option is a means for all captains to join one away team for a more multiplayer co-op experience as a crew of one ship. Or that's how I read it in that article anyways.

i hope there are alot more professions then just putting everyone up in space.
there is alot more to star trek then the ships flying around fighting. but most games have centered around that only.

edit;
i would stay on planet and go full time into some money making craft. make them starship captains need me.

Q: Do I need to be well-versed in Star Trek lore in order to play Star Trek Online?
A: No, even the most casual Star Trek fan will enjoy and appreciate the world. For those not familiar with the Star Trek universe, Star Trek Online will be a new experience with as much depth as each individual is comfortable with exploring. However, the world will be rich with lore from every series and movie that will satisfy even the most devout Trek fan.

Q: Will there be realistic travel times in space?
A: Travel times will be semi-realistic, with a focus on fun. Space is big, and it can take a very long time to travel great distances. That travel time can be impractically long. We will introduce transwarp conduit technology and worm holes to allow players to travel to distant sectors of the galaxy without needing days or weeks of gameplay to do so.

This is the first mistake of making a game based over a fan-based show, "lets add in stuff that was never in the TV show and makes no sense!". Worm holes are incredibly unrealistic in the Star Trek Universe, I'd go for something along the lines of Warp Waypoints, these points would send you across the universe within 5 mins or whatever and not WORM HOLES because we all know how safe they are!

Most hardcore Treky's I know would rather live out the "Star Trek" life, as in being apart of a crew and maintaining a ship with there (Clan leader) Captain. But with a concept like that its unrealistic and not very interesting to the public (Yes you friends). Overall I rather do some RP in a Star Trek Mod then join a MMO that has over 1 MILLION SHIP CAPTAINS! Because we honestly knew the Star Trek Universe had that much god damn resources to build all of those. I'm a Captain, though I'm actually a Medic!

I'd really would of preferred a 5-man ship (Like a WoW Instance) with the Captain/Other bridge crew that allows you to use certain ships and go off and do quests and what not. So many problems with this but it'd at least be a little more realistic then a generic MMO.

Conclusion (Read if you don't want to read all of that):
Star Trek Online will most likely be a MMO clone no different from other MMO's in the aspect of YOU ARE THE MAIN HERO among thousands of other "Heroes", the only real Star Trek innervation is the fact its the theme.

A Good example of an epic MMO that fitted in within a Movie/Show Theme is Star Wars Galaxies (Pre-CU), to become the best at the game you'd have to work your ass off to get there. Jedi's where rare just because of how much effort it requires to be one (Grinding out entire classes). Star Wars Online, you are instantly the captain of a ship (As stuff as it may be) straight off the mark.

its not star wars, it was made from scratch.
Didnt you see? the graphics are way better!
never said it was star wars i meant ...does it have some of the same principals

^(above post) the only part i liked about your post is the fact that you said SWG's is a great mmo (even though it got screwed form a patch that ruined everything and made the game nearly DEAD X_X)

From the developers interview, you start off as a cadet straight from the academy and given a small ship. People will eventually have to earn their captain's rank and the ships that they will be able to interchange and customize. So it's not automatically given to you right off the bat. And it's not yet determined that captain is the final rank to have. Some people may be admiral to fleet captain depending on how the command structure is set up. Also, a means has to be created to ensure that the ranks will not be so easy to earn to ensure a challenge for the players. I understand your rant, but let's wait until people have played the beta to make sure what features will be present and what people will recommend for the final release.

With all MMORPGs, you'll notice similar aspects of one game in another. It just means it's a working format of the game that makes development easier and ready for release sooner.

Great ideas and realism cant always happen on an mmo.
the developers have to think about the masses and keep them having fun so that they keep subscribing.
To do that, they give them the easier rewards and lots of storyline heroism.

If i wanted to be a ship captain, i don't want everyone else in the game to also be one without much effort.

the only game play ive seen so far is ships strafing around each other and shooting.
I REALLY hope that's not what the game is centered around.
even star wars galaxies wasn't like that.
