lay out the size with 64*64s, then add containing walls, then start on terrain, bases, bridges/objects, events, and then final touches (i see something coming on the last one...)

Usually you should make it in Single Player. If you make it on internet, beware people messing with your build. If you want outside help and/or are good with managing other people, feel free to make it online. If you have multiple comps+a friend, LAN works too.

Point is, do whatever seems best for the project.

Depends where I am. If I'm at home, passworded server because my internet sucks too much to host a server.

If I am somewhere else, I'll let people join, and build whatever they want as long as it's not causing any problems, or in my way. Once I finish building, I tell them to save and give them a few minutes. I clear their bricks then save my build, and start whatever needs to be started.

If you make it on internet, beware people messing with your build.

Keep in mind that people can only mess with your build if you're stupid enough to give stupid people trust.

If you want outside help and/or are good with managing other people, feel free to make it online.

I don't think I could handle managing other players and trying to direct them on a build.

Plus, I'm design-oriented and sketch up designs for everything ahead of time.

You only have to be good at pressing decline/ignore to not have people mess with your build.
You only have to be good at pressing ban to not have annoying people.

Thats why I only let people help if I know them, and then only build trust so they can't mess with anything.
