I heard milkshape select all the faces behind the one you are trying to select, as well as does not allow selection in 3d perspective (only allows selection in side, top, front, etc)
You can toggle selecting back faces.And it has 4 views by default.Front Top and LeftAnd a 3D one you can rotate in, but not model in.
Pro Tip: Don't use subsurf. It spams faces like Google Sketch-up.
