But I have terrible luck and will never find one by accident. I've played Pokemon all my life and I've never even seen a wild shiny, yet everyone here seems to have found a few each, most of them in this game and about twice a day.

You never find a shiny when you're looking for them.
Shiny Trapinch, I was just loving around in the desert of Ruby because I was bored and found it
Mr. Mime, Was training my Gyarados and found it
Pikachu, was looking for a pikachu in the trophy garden and I was ogmsocool when I saw it.

Here's the problem: I want a shiny Ralts and they only appear in a swarm, so I can't "accidentally" find one. It's either find the swarm and fight Ralts for no reason or breed until I hatch one.

The only difference between shinies and normal is a VERY slight stat boost and color.

I didn't even know about the stat boost. I just wanted it for the alternate color.

Fun fact: It's impossible to have a shiny female pokemon if the gender ratio is 7:1, male to female respectively
