Computer Crashing Issue

Ok, so this problem has been going on for a while... Any game, at any settings crashes my computer after playing constantly. The time varies with the games. What happens is it repeats sound for about 2 seconds, and the monitor turns off, yet the computer remains running.

What is this caused by?

I am kind of confused because the title says your computer crashes but then in the post you say only the monitor turns off, and the computer doesn't, does the computer remain perfect or does it freeze up or do the games shut off or what?

How would he know if the monitor is off?

I can't say for sure but it sounds like an overheat.

Your graphics card is overheating.  Same thing happened to me about two years ago, I simply got a new one.

Yea, I keep all my old GPUs and such, if you have a spare GPU or you have a decent integrated graphics chip that can run one of those games, take the GPU out and see if it still happens. Also if you have a spare monitor try a different monitor.

It's not necessarily the graphics card overheating, which is why I asked my question.

Monitors turn on/off via a button.  Having the monitor off without pushing a button indicates that pushing said button would only serve to turn the monitor off.  He could then turn it back on, but this has never worked for any of the people that I've seen have this problem.

You could also see if the fans in your computer aren't working or clogged. Also see if your graphics card's fan is working. It might also help (if you don't have another GPU) to set up a small stationary fan with your side panel off.



Edit: When my 9800's fan died I had the same problem. It's odd that your monitor turned off though. Mine showed the no signal then went into standby.

I remember starting a Dell Monitor support thread at Dell.com, because I thought that it was the monitor and nothing else.  I tried like 3 different monitors, and finally the Dell customer service guy told me my graphics card was overheating.

Got a new 7600 (since my old computer only took AGP) and it fixed everything.

EDIT: The reason I got a new one is because, after trying 3 different monitors, my graphics card was totally fried by then.

Clean the dust out of your computer.

Other possibilities would be either your power supply and/or your video card being fried.

And I remember having to RMA my PSU because something was faulty, causing everything plugged in to the back off the computer to turn off.

Hehe AGP. I have one of those laying around. Ancient Nvidia with no heat-sink or anything.
