When I got a Windows Live/MSN virus, my anti virus software at least warned me and game me a file. From there I was able to find information online and remove it. I used a second computer to do this and kept the infected computer offline until I was done since this was on XP, which had that annoying preinstalled version of messenger the virus would use to auto login and do stuff.

Windows Live didn't get hacked.
Your friends didn't get hacked.

Your friends fell for handicapped phishing scams and send them to eachother to also fall for the same phishing scam.
You also fell for it by clicking the links.

Their accounts have fallen to scammers and the hackers of windows live.
