Author Topic: Going to be upgrading my PC, need advice on parts.  (Read 2429 times)

I have a Pentium Dual-Core processor right now, an Nvidia 8500 GT, and 3Gb RAM. My idea is to get a Phenom-II Quad-Core. As for graphics, I'd like to know about good, high quality gaming ATI cards. Finally, I'm going to upgrade to 4Gb RAM. Is this a decent setup?

Nope.  Have fun trying to get that processor to work.  You need a motherboard that supports AMD processors.

Hey man, your going to have to supply alot more information about your current computer before you can consider parts for upgrading.
Start by finding what model your motherboard is, you could use a tool like CPU-Z (http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php) to find out just about everything about your computer.
Once we know what processors and graphics your board can support, then you can pick the correct cpu or graphics card upgrade.

Hey I got a good budget pc that i'm buying, this guy built it, very cheap, and it's decent. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcB-GnX3XqI

Processor: Intel pentium 4 630
Motherboard: Dell 0WG261 (Stock)
Is there anything else I should be looking for?

Motherboard, I think.

Yeah what is the model number of the dell you have. Depending on which one it is, there may be a good chance you wont be able to put in a new motherboard because almost all newer dells use BTX motherboards, which are nearly impossible to find.

Dimension E510

Ugh, ATI...
ATI cards are give you the best value for the money you spend on them, and they produce the fastest graphics cards at the moment.

Anyways, yuki, your dell can only use BTX motherboards, so you are pretty screwed there. I would recommend buying a whole new computer because you cant put a phenom II in an intel socket like marcem said.

Yuki. Buy something that will benefit you in the long term, that you can still upgrade in like 4 years.

Indeed. This is how dell screws you over because they use as few standard parts as possible so you cant upgrade your computers much so when it gets old-> buy new one from them.

Nevermind, gonna custom build.

Bumping; My new plan is to invest in a new motherboard and processor, and use the RAM, fan, graphics card from my current setup with the new parts. Good idea? Will it improve my computer?
