That would be a good idea.  That's what I did.

Mind suggesting a motherboard that might support a Phenom (or an alternative processor?)

If it's from AMD, then you need an AM3 motherboard.

Suggest a specific motherboard? I don't know what I'm looking for.

How would this one be?

It's good, but I think you should choose a motherboard with a PCI-E 2.0 x16 slot just to be safe.

Also what is the difference between these?

Aside from price?
There's a difference in Operating Frequency and Thermal Design Power. I think you're better off getting the first one. :D

I chose the processor and motherboard you recommended, thank you. Also, that processor is Quad cored?

Also also, exchanging my stock Dell motherboard and processor for this will improve my computer greatly, correct?

It wont improve gaming much, your current graphics card is pretty bad, but it should be very good for other stuff like video editing and web browsing.

ATI may be cheaper, but you'll most likely have trouble with it. My friend and my brother have ATI and have driver problems all the time.

Ya thats true, Nvidia has greatly superior driver support.

I plan on getting a high-grade ATI card in the future, these Nvidia ones aren't that good in the long run.

What is your budget for the whole system. Also you may not be able to use the ram depending on which type of motherboard you are using.

I <3 my ATI Radeon 5057.
