So, I just got steam. I have no games, and someone told me I can add friends. When I try, I get this error message.

Are there any REALLY small demos, that I could get in a reasonable amount of time?
I'm downloading Portal: The first slice right now... but its gonna take at least 2 days and...

I don't know how badly these forums are disconnected from reality, but that's a long time!

It says I have a program called "R.U.S.E. Beta" under the "not installed" category.

I think that means I can install that, never play it, and have steam running. Right?

You can't do it with demos. I have downloaded countless demos, but I still can't add friends.
