There are timed grenades that explode after a set amout time after impact.

Different than Modern Warfare 2's  M79.

There it doesn't explode if it's in the air too long. Also, the grenade doesn't explode when shot at something at a close range. (just might be a different type of grenade I'm not sure)

By the way, is it possible to make a right click option for the M79 where you switch to smoke cartridges? It could come quite handy.

No, it wouldn't. You can still see names above people's heads through smoke. And they would only alert them more of your location.
