Author Topic: Mapping  (Read 53235 times)

This thread is dedicated to mapping for video games, whether it is for Blockland, from hammer, or anything else, it should go here.

A new portal idea I thought up:

Looks like a normal fizzler, right?

Wrong!
This fizzler can be disabled to get something like a cube out of that room.

Lighting is pretty bad.

Also,

I'm trying to decide if I'm going to keep mapping or not.

Lighting is pretty bad.
Yeah, the map was meant as more of a proof of concept, I'm now going to make an actual map dedicated to the idea.

Oh, basically the idea that you could take a weighted cube to the next room w/ you?

In other news, a little building I started for the lulz and because I haven't mapped in forever.

It's a geometric clusterforget (brush optimization wise), it has no textures or lighting or anything but I like the way it looks geometry wise.

Also it's loosely modeled after this old building in my town:

I would post maps, but it would spoil the new GM gamemode im making...

Hint: It will use blockhead ragdolls and playermodels.

Oh, who cares?
Just post it!  I want to see what people are making.

Sirrus, that looks awesome.

I must say, Sirrus, if you quit now just think of all of the people you'll be disappointing. I love your maps even if I can't play them online and stuff. :) I appreciate your work. Keep at it, dude, please. :)

Thanks dude, that really means a lot. I'll get around to optimizing RP_Construct here eventually, it's just the thing is that when you spend such a massive amount of time and large portions of something working towards a single goal, your thoughts begin to revolve around that goal. And once that happens, in some ways its nice because you're doing something you enjoy for other people and in some ways it really sucks because it consumes your free time. People bitch at you, tell you to change things, you do and it's still not good enough for some. You don't and you get bitched at. Then once you're done, the elitist mappers that have been doing it for six years blow holes in your hours on end of hard work. At one point my map even got called, more or less "A huge waste of time that could be replicated in three days by any half-decent mapper". It really sucks because you've got one group of people that really like your work at face value and another group of people that you know are better than you and most everyone that likes you at what you're doing that criticize every aspect of the map and the work that goes into it. I get the point of constructive criticism but there's some people that don't have a single nice thing to say about my map and my efforts, brutally berating me in the interest of improving my art because "if you sugarcoat everything you'll never get better".

So you might see why I don't want to immediately revisit my large project mapping venture, but your praise means a lot.

Yeah, same here, except that that it wasn't that bad with GM_Bedroom.  All that was said was that the textures repeated too much.

Textures y/n?

Interior textures are unspeakably ugly.

In-game pictures. Threw down some fast and dirty lighting to show off the interior. It's going to have rooms and stuff when it's done, but for now it has no interior walls. I also think I might get a better ceiling texture.

Wow, that's sweet.

Well, I just spent a few hours on a test chamber for my fizzler idea, most of that time was spent on the box dropper, lol.

That eventing system for maps is so confusing. So far all I've managed is simple moving doors/windows and simple two stop elevators. It's powerful, but complex.

Even though there are those elitist friends out there.. Just think. One day, you'll be as good as them, and not a friend. Inside, you might personally think you're a friend for knowing you're not and knowing they are, haha, but you'll be better than them if you just keep at it. :)
Trust me. I've gone through it too. xD
Really though, I am a fan. :)
