PCWorld says Avira Anti Vir is the best free antivirus

I use it in conjunction with Threatfire.

Works like a charm.
I've also heard that Malwarebytes is a good cleanup tool.

Avast! is an awesome antivirus even though they completely ruined the look of it. After 5.0 it looks like spyware.
Malwarebytes' is a good tool for finding and killing viruses, and you already know about the magic of CCleaner

Does free version of avast have on-access protection?

Avast has regular updates and support and an excellent active shield.
