The 700w was a future proofing thing. It will be nice if he intends to overclock (depending on the board, I may or may not suggest this) it will also support enthusiast cards and should last quite a while.

Your rebate theory is a little shaky in my heart. :p

That's another advantage of buying things in chunks, I can buy the case and the psu and and get the rebates and put that back into saving w/out having to save $50 extra to buy it if I bought everything together.

Can I go ahead and buy that?

edit: also, will buying this limit my mobo/processor/gpu options at all?

The Antec 300 is a great case with easy cable management, great airflow and plenty of space.

Corsair makes the best PSU's but you have to spend a bit more money.  That OCZ doesn't even show the amperage on its rails, which makes it hard to tell whether or not it is substantially better.  The Antec PSU isn't too bad, it most certainly isn't a piece of stuff.

The 5770 runs cooler than the 4870, has DX11, but isn't as powerful.  That being said, the 5770 is the better choice, it will run anything you need.  I normally don't roll with combos, but the one drbling posted is pretty good for a budget PC.  The 500W PSU would be plenty enough to power a 5770 too.

Is it a good quality PSU? Also will I have enough room in the Antec 300 for all my components?

Finally, will the 5770 max any current game no problem?

Yes.
Yes.
It should.  If not, it will be damn close.

This is for later on, but will I still need a pricey processor? I was going to get a AMD Phenom II X4 3.4GHz Quad but if the GPU can take most of the strain in-game, could I go down to a 2.6 Quad?

I've bought this PSU(Didn't fail me once):

And I've bought this case, however you might have trouble putting your graphics card and harddrive in there:

I've bought the same processor(3.0 ghz), and I'm so far satisfied with it.

Okay, one final question and then I think I'm going to go with Righteous One's combo deal (I'd like to have a good airflow case with plenty of room and a reliable PSU that I don't need to upgrade later) but I need to know: do I need to worry AT ALL about compatiblity issues with my motherboard, graphics card, hard drive, or ANY OTHER components when making this purchase, or are motherboards one-size-fits-all when it comes to cases and PSUs?

Also, on a slightly unrelated note, does any mobo fit all graphics cards and is processor/CPU compatibility is the only really big thing you need to worry about?

I was exaggerating on how much that PSU sucked, but still.

What motherboard are you choosing. There shouldn't be any problems with compatibility. And get the Phenom II X4 955, not the 965.

I'm still a ways off from the mobo and processor, but I'm leaning towards this mobo:

mmmph

What's your budget?

I was hoping to get in around $800, though I'm sure its going to change if I'm buying things one at a time.

Is it bad or not?

It's alright, lemme see if I can do a little better. Are you recycling the HDD and ODD or anything like that?

No, I need to keep my current computer for my brother.

HDD's and ODD's are so cheap. I found a 500GB Western Digital one for $70, and by the time I fill that one up I'm sure I'll have money to upgrade. ODD's are like $20.

also, keep "doing better" within $10 of that one I picked, I don't want too much money to go into the mobo. I want to splurge a bit on the processor, GPU and maybe the RAM, and have everything else passable but not flashy.

:(

This topic is sorta dying so I'll PM you the list.

It's ironic that you're going through the same dilema is me. I just got W7 in the mail today and I hope to get the rest of my computer in the next week.
