Author Topic: Case fan wiring.  (Read 2766 times)

Hey folks. So, I got my case and power supply today and I want to hook up my case fans to my power supply to see if everything is in working order. Plus, if I get at least one thing working it'll give me the confidence to keep going with this thing, because I keep thinking I'm going to forget everything up and my build is going to fail miserably. SO, can someone give me a step by step of how to hook up all my case fans and how to get them all running?

edit: I'll give pictures as requested for clarification.

You just plug the cables in. There isn't really any trick to it.

What's the name of the little white plugs with 4 holes? MOLEX?
You connect those to the fans.

Yeah, computers are built in an easy way, just hook up wires that have the same looking connector.

Only thing I have problem with is hooking up power to the mobo, but that could be because I haven't done it in 5 years.

Do I have to do anything to the PSU the first time I start it? I plugged it in, flipped the switch, and nothing happened.

Helps if you connect the PSU to the power switch on the case?

Oh, so you have to turn the case on to turn the case fans on?

I, am a dumbass.

That is all you should need to know about a computer.

Think about it, if it was just to flick the PSU switch, my computer would constantly be on. But it only turns on when I press the power button.

True, true. I figured since it was going right from fan to PSU nothing else would need to be on.

But here's the problem, I don't have a power supply cable for the wires that come back from the power button and LEDs. I assume they're on the motherboard?

Wait hold on, the PSU fan doesn't even turn on, is this bad or do I need the power switch for that too?

You need the power switch for that too. Also, for me, my power switch cables came with the case, not the mobo. Now that I think of it, I think they went thru the mobo. Been a while since I installed a PSU, sorry.

Okay, so I have to have the mobo to test if my case fans and PSU are working?

I believe so. Don't quote me on it.

Okay.

Question for a little bit down on the road: Is mounting the mobo hard?
