That makes sense for some, but for me it was a case of school getting in the way of what I wanted to learn by myself which I figured would be more instrumental to my success.

That makes sense, though I do learn what I want to learn after school. I would much rather have a break from the computer, rather than being on it all day, encapsulated in projects.
