Cannot Mix Dyes?

I'm using the proper mixes to making them, but all I ever get are the custom dyes or nothing at all.

Black on black makes pitch black, right? So, when I tried that, the game didn't even give me a pitch black dye. It didn't even remove my black dye. Someone explain to me, step by step, how to mix dyes, so I can check if I'm doing it right.

Black + Black shouldn't equal pitch black.

Black + black isn't pitch black you idiot. Because of the way the dye system works you cannot make pitch black dye. Find it at the volcano.

Mixing black and black gives you two black dyes.

damnit, I was wrong about pitch black then.

Whatever. Anyways, I can't mix other dyes because it'll give me a custom dye. I've used the proper purple recipe and it gave a custom dye.
