Author Topic: Nasty Graphics card grinding  (Read 2366 times)

Of course, I just HAVE to be one of those people who bought a Pavillion.

Basically right now, HP Pavillions are the Toyotas of the computer world. Most of the pavillion desktops came with one of these buggers:

Ironically enough, mine has one. It's a Nvidia GeForce 9500GS, and the fan on it is wobbly to the point of it grinding on the sides of the fan case. My example:

... Does anyone smell burnt plastic yet?

It really sucks, because it heats up the card and if I'm not careful it may melt. My dad and I came up with a quick solution of vacuming the fan and putting some Non-conductive grease on it, that lasted about an hour?

Here's where it relates to Toyota, MSI and HP have been recalling pavillions because of this dangerously hungry card. I can get a free replacement for my card (HP says I may get a better one instead for free... :D) which has a much more sturdy center post for it.

I don't plan on replacing the card any time soon, because I managed to stop the grinding a little bit for a while. Let's just hope it stays that way for as long as possible.

Vacuuming it? Not with a real vacuum I hope.

you should allow it to burn your house down.

then start some stuff with HP lol

Vacuuming it? Not with a real vacuum I hope.

Yeah, with a real vacuum.

It's safe as long as there are no loose parts on the card, and there weren't. You should be more worried about my dad putting liquid on the actual card itself.

My pavillion came with integrated. I got a new card, and it sounds like stuff, even though the picture is fine.

Holy stuff, it sounds like a saw.

Yeah, with a real vacuum.

Not the loose parts, it generates static electricity.

...

... Well at least it's still working, right? :D

That stuff will fry your mobo.

A PROBLEM APPROACHES

It started grindin' again.

So, we took apart the card to figure out wtf was it's problem. As soon as we took off the black casing covering the fan, our problem stuck out like a sore thumb.

there was a 3-5 inch thick WALL of dust in the metal cooling wafer thingies.

We vacuumed (it's not the motherboard, it's the graphics card itself) the dust out and now it doesn't need to past it's default speed to get past the wall of dead skin.

But it won't be long until it starts happening again, so I'm calling HP to get the upgraded card tonight.

Oh stuff it's gonna kill my father and rape my mother?

Jeez. I know how you feel, I guess. My mom's old laptop has a fan on it that sounds like a loving buzzsaw. My old desktop, we replaced the fan with some old fan from some old computer in our basement. That stuff is loud. It sounds like a cheese grater was stuck to the side of the fan's blades lol

Nasty graphics card grinding, eh?

Sounds NSFW.

It sounds like a miter saw that people get from Sears!
