Author Topic: Trying to access this old hard drive  (Read 1645 times)

So, my laptop died and I got a desktop. Then I opened it and took it out, carefully. Very carefully. I made sure I didn't generate any static shocks off it and put it in one of those red plastic bags to avoid producing any static. I ordered a sata to esata cable, hooked the hard drive up to my desktop, and now I don't know how to access it.

Help me. ):

Did you connect a power connector from the PSU to the hard drive?

No, didn't think I had to.

Well, it needs its own power connector, not necessarily from the PSU.

No, didn't think I had to.
DURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

You're in luck though, laptop SATA uses a standard SATA power cable for power. All you need to do is just plug that in. If you're out you can buy Molex to SATA power adapters for like $2 for a set of twelve billion or so

No, didn't think I had to.
Have you noticed that your hard drive makes noise?

And you know, it spins. How is it supposed to spin without power?

Not all hard drives spin.

Not all hard drives spin.
I don't want to give you the dignity of a half-assed troll post, so I'm just going to call you an idiot.

But what about SSD?

Grab a strongish battery and run it across the hard drive a few times. After a while the hard drive looses charge and requires re boot in this way.

Then the computer should detect the hard drive and you are good to go.

Even if he did have a laptop SSD, it'd still require power, rendering the issue moot.

Yeah do this it'll work

Yeah do this it'll work

It works for every type of hard drive, too.
