The more time that goes by, the more I fail to understand its popularity. Most of the generalizations about it measure up. It's all pretty depressing, If it's not depressing, they literally sing about tractors or drinking, It all abuses the southern accent, They really do use "honky tonk" as actual lyrics in many songs, and they can't lay off the damn steel guitar to save their lives.

I listened to it until I was 12 or 13 simply because I accepted what my family listened to. I had not been exposed to better things. I will show my country listening friends an array of amazing songs of varying genres in attempt to show them something other than Keith Urban or Kenny Chesney, but they would honestly rather buddy up with the rest of their flannel wearing brethren and sing off-key to a song about "loving in the sticks."

Maybe I should be more specific.

Mainstream Country.

I still don't like that, but it's not nearly as bad as the stuff I have to hear on the radio during my nine hour work shift.

mainstream meaning "hannah montana"
if so, I agree.

I can't stand country music, me and my friends have never liked it and often makes jokes about it like how the rise of popularity in country music was also the rise of Self Delete rates. Unfortunitly I live in a state that takes pride in their cheese and dairy (not California) and the older population plates country music a quarter of the time. Of course when they don't play country they play music that people have hurd too much and they play every other day so I've given up on radio fully.

I still listen to country when my mom puts it on.

But my fave is Clean rap.

not that stuff
