Author Topic: Unable to host.  (Read 1389 times)

Hello.

I've had this computer for a year now, and haven't felt like hosting since I had my old computer, where it worked fine. I decided I wanted to get it working to host a server.
I went to my router page, and it reported only one DNS server, whereas I need 2.
So, I pulled up ipconfig /all and that too reported only one DNS server.

When I go to make a server, the error I get is 'Authentication DNS failed'.

I haven't changed anything at all in the router settings while switching computers. My old computer reported 2 DNS servers. I'm not sure how it's even related to the computer when it reports it in the router page, but whatever.

What can I do?

Start -> run -> nslookup
Type: master.blockland.us

Then, type: server <DNS server IP>

Tell me all the output.

Odd, you shouldn't NEED 2 DNS servers... However your primary one may not like something from blockland.

DNS basically resolves www.google.com into a readable IP address, so I don't know why it has trouble with Blockland; unless the master server is given as the url (master.blockland.us?)... What you could do is try some different DNS servers.... I know google do a public one (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4). If you want a more detailed guide on how to do this post your OS.

Edit: Kalph beat me to nslookup :c

Oops, I forgot to add.
After typing server <DNS server IP>, type "master.blockland.us" again

Also, Vista 32-bit, SP2, Home Premium

I typed master.blockland.us again:

> master.blockland.us
Server: [192.168.254.254]
Address: 192.168.254.254

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: master.blockland.us
Address: 70.86.174.34

Go to your router page, see if you can set DNS servers to auto from ISP.

Hmmm, seems to be resolving it to the same IP that my DNS is resolving it to....

I'll leave Kalph to solve this topic (I'm sure he will be able to); I feel he will do a better job.

I can set 'self' on primary DNS and Default Gateway, but theres no option for the secondary one, it's just a manual one.

Router: Speedstream 4200

Hmm, this may work... May not... Might be worth a try.

I'm going to change your DNS to the Google ones... Follow these instructions.

1) Control Panel
2) Classic View > Network + Sharing Control Center
3) Manage Network Connections (Left hand toolbar)
4) Right click on your network name (commonly "Local Area Connection")
5) Properties
6) Highlight "Internet Protocol Version 4" (by clicking on it)
7) Properties
8a) Take note/screenshot of current settings (in case you have to revert)
8b) "Use the following DNS Server Addresses"
8c) "Preferred DNS Server" -  8.8.8.8
8d) "Secondary DNS Server" - 8.8.4.4
9) Apply etc.

Try it; I am doubtful of the success.

Instead of getting the error when trying to start, it went into the server.

But, nobody joined, and the ping was ---. I've got UPnP enabled on it's highest possible setting (enable all)

Have you got port forwarding on aswell? If so, disable it.

I did, until I enabled UPnP then I disabled Port Forwarding.
