What I would do is get a M16 and a USP.45. Before I get those, I would get my golf club and fight my way to the gun store. Then I would find a jeep and drive + swim to Cuba.

In Dawn of The Dead they escaped to a boat, went to an island.  I guess zombies don't swim.

I don't think they would have enough cordination to successfully get from point A to B via swimming, they'd most likely get confused and just drown.

Zombies cannot drown. They do not breathe. They can walk underwater, survive, and get to an island/boat/whatever else would be out in the middle of a body of water.
