Author Topic: processor question  (Read 1508 times)

Hey folks.

I've made two recent attempts to make a thread asking a serious question and all I get is half-assed jokes that are not helpful and even less funny, so I'm going to ask another question in hopes that I'll get a different result.

I recently bought my processor. It did not come with a heat sink. Should I order a heat sink, or is it fine with just a bit of thermal paste on top?

You're better off using steam to message the people who actually know what they're doing when it comes to these things, topics attract stupid people.

I don't think thermal paste would be enough to stop a processor from overheating. I suggest you get a heatsink just to be safe

Without a heatsink your CPU will be completely fried in very short amount of time, I've heard 5-10 seconds. I would guess 1 minute.

EDIT: I just watched a video, an intel processor will freeze and shut off immediately, an AMD CPU will reach 300 degrees in a matter of seconds and be completely useless.

I would be safe and just order a heatsink.

Dammet xrobo, that wasn't even close to on topic.

Anyway, thanks Snaffle. I'll lump one in with my next set of parts.

would something like this work?

Do you have any suggestions?

Do you have any suggestions?
Not really. I don't know that much about computers, to be honest.

Olol.

Liquid-cooling has a heatsink also. the heatsink isn't the fan it is the giant piece of whatever metal it is, like aluminum I think most of them are, that absorbs most of the heat.

He wouldn't really need liquid cooling unless he has multiple harddrives and processors as well as a hardcore GPU.

Oh yeah, because I can definitely rework my entire build, buy a new case and spend exorbitant amounts of money at this stage to get liquid cooling.

dude you don't need a heatsink, just download some more ram

A heatsink and fan combo is probably fine for a stock processor and getting liquid cooling would be needlessly expensive.

Just go to newegg and look at reviews and you will probably find one that tons of people love, it isn't going to take a fancy cooler to keep your CPU running smooth unless you plan to overclock it way up. BTW a heatsink with a fan on it is called a cooler.
