If they were different computers they would get a connection error.

So yeah, it was kind of silly to tell them they couldn't do it. If they were breaking the rules they wouldn't even be able to play at the same time.

Yeah you can, but if the IP is different (aka on a different internet connection, if the computers are connected by LAN this wont be an issue) then you'll get a connection error iirc

Sharing one key among different computers in the same house is allowed.  That is why it works.
