What happens is there is a strong magnet underneath, and the top is spinning so it can maintain itself as a gyrocopter and keep it's orientation straight.

Magnets create fields of energy. Iron happens to be affected by these fields. I'm not sure why it's iron though.

It's the makeup of Iron's atoms that cause it to have a specific charge which magnetically attracts it to that of opposite electrons.
