Author Topic: Alienware M11x  (Read 2110 times)

This is the laptop I'm going to be getting over the summer. Total cost is $849.
It will be replacing my HP nx9110 laptop.

Specs:

Yeah I know, it has a Pentium processor, but honestly, $849 is about the max I'll be able to earn over the summer. I may or may not be able to upgrade to the Core 2 Duo processor.

I want a laptop with good battery life and good performance, as well as kickass looks, and this machine has it.

Discuss.

You could get a 5 times better computer if you built a desktop. But if you want a laptop, alienware would be the way to go i guess.

I bet you someone is going to come here and tell you that you can get a better laptop, for the same price, somewhere else.

I already have a desktop PC that's plenty good enough for modern day gaming. I really need to get my hands on a new laptop, not a used one.

the ONLY reason I would ever buy an alienware computer is for the colorchanging leds.
those are awesome.

but yeah, I dont really like alienware. they look like a toy, not a computer.

good specs though, I guess. Kinda small hard drive though, are you going to upgrade?

Yeah. The HDD is quite small, but upgrading to a 320 GB costs a lot on Dell's website, and it'd be much cheaper to buy one separately and install it.

It'd only cost $64 to buy a 500 GB HDD off newegg.

Just a short look at new egg, and I see many better than that for the same or better price. Alienware really isn't the top in computers for their prices, they are just flashy peices of plastic.

But can they have up to 6 hours of battery life?
And hybrid graphics (switch between integrated and dedicated)?
And are they as small as this (11 inch screen)?

what's worse is that they are ugly as hell.

i am a spoiled aluminum unibody macbook user c:

I've got 7 hours of battery life, and it really does hold up for 7 hours. It's nice.
also 11 inches? that's rather small, especially for a gaming computer

:(
I like the way Alienware laptops look! I think they look neat (although don't get me wrong, aluminum MacBooks look nice too).

But yeah, I'm getting this because it's actually...portable. Unlike a lot of other gaming laptops out there.

saw that ninja

I can't really tell by that picture, but aren't alienware computers like really thick?

Doesn't seem too thick.

BUT CAN IT FIT IN AN ENVELOPE? NO! HAHA!

Despite some opinions on the quality of Alienware systems, I own and am currently using an Alienware desktop.  It is an Area 51 model and I have yet to see any performance problems with it after two years of constant use.  All the appropriate software was installed by the manufacturer and it runs my most graphically intensive programs smoothly.

It is true, however, that Alienwares are a little overly-flashy.  While LED keyboards and interior glow lights are sweet, they run up an electric bill pretty quick.  If that is not on your list of concerns, then you need not worry.

I cannot really speak for Alienware laptops, but if you're looking into buying from them, you may as well get exactly what you want...upgrade the stock M11 to include more efficient parts - stronger processor, graphics card, etc.  It costs more, but in the long run (oh, say 5 years down the road) when more graphically intensive programs are released, you'll be glad that you don't have to buy a new system / upgrade your laptop to meet their needs.

Also, don't buy Norton when they offer to install it before shipping.  Norton blows and doesn't provide as good of protection as it advertises.  Trojans can easily bypass it.  Get Microsoft Security Essentials, SpyBot, and the like.

Eww, Norton. They actually offered McAfee when I was building the system on their website. Of course, I don't plan on getting either because I've used both, and both suck. My old Dell Optiplex 320 came with Norton preinstalled. Within the first few minutes of using it, I uninstalled it and put avast! on the thing.

I think that this Alienware will prove to be quite nice down the road, and I think that being able to overclock the processor will help out quite a bit. Plus, seeing as how it has a higher-end GPU (the 335M), I think it'll have no problems playing games down the road.

Thanks for your opinion, I'm pretty much looking 100% at getting this now.
