Author Topic: Laptop RAM questions  (Read 1384 times)

As of late, I've realized that my 1 gig of RAM isn't really cutting it. I want to upgrade but I'm not really sure what to get.

I have Windows XP. I've heard it only supports up to 2 gigs, but I'm not sure. I want 4 gigs, but if the maxium is less then that, I'll be ok with that also.

It says DIMM A DDR2 only. Not exactly sure what it means.

I have 4 gigs :sunglasses:

There are different types of RAM cards. That is one of them.

That's what I assumed, but I wasn't possitive.

I know 32 bit Vista only supports up to 3 gigs, so I assume all 32 bit OSes support only up to 3 gigs.

Im packing 24, motherforgeter.

Ok, thanks. So I should still buy 4 gigs so I get the max?

Cool but why get a desktop with the same specs as a laptop
laptop>desktop:
Portable
All one thing--no use of USB ports for keyboard and mouse
Same power in a smaller package
Same port options

Truth.

Generally all copies of Windows XP are 32-bit, so you can support up to 3.5 GB out of personal experience. There is such thing as XP 64-bit but its really weird and is almost as rare as the hope diamond.

You could buy another 1GB, that should help.

bullstuff.

I have 4 gigs on my laptop. it's nice, I use a little over 1 gig for background programs (skype, itunes, and firefox) and usually another 1 or 2 for whatever game i'm playing or foreground application i've got up (Photoshop, usually)

I don't see why you'd need more than 3, I rarely ever get that high.

A laptop with the same specs as a desktop probably costs more. I got my laptop for $1000, but it has the same RAM as my $400 desktop.

I have 4gb :P
I can hold 8

I have to RAM chips at the moment, both 512mb, so I would need to buy two. Also, as this laptop is the replacement for a desktop, I plan on going all out as much as I can. So I think I'm going to get 4gigs if the max is 3.5.

Get 2GB's, unless your Laptop is awfully powerful its not worth the extra beef.
