I don't see why they should be forgiven. They find these things to be the high point of their lives, and that's quite sad they can't find any good reason to feel good about themselves. People who consider them cool are usually just as cruel, or afraid that getting in cruel people's way will get them attacked instead.
I know I'm going to get killed for the above, but I will never forgive people for being jerks and somehow being considered highly for it.
