Author Topic: Steam Problem  (Read 3045 times)

Well, Steam has finally been released for Mac. So I got the client and I decided I was going to try out the free demo for Portal called, Portal: First Slice. I downloaded it and hit the play button. It starts the launch and is looking good so far, but then is says, " Steam-Error [This game is currently unavailable. Please try again another time.] It's been a good 3 hours and it still says the same thing. Why? Please help.

The problem is that you're using a mac.

O shut it. Mac isn't that bad. I know it isn't a great gaming computer and I know its overrated and everything but I don't mind.

I'm using a PC and I have the same problem. But with Dead Space.

Sorry, I'm not trying to do anything wrong here.

Well, This is like...The Only NON FLAME comment, But okay,

This is happening because sence the Relese of Steam for the mac, and free portal, And what not, Everything, and everyone (Including Striders!) are using the steam server. NOW to fix this, You need to...

1. Go to Steam Account Prefrences, Download Prefs, And Set your Network Connection to 10M Fiber Cable (Even If your not using it) Set your location to your closest.

2. Use TCP! TCP, Okay, On windows you can easily right click and set Launch options, But on a mac you can't so what you need to do is Open Terminal (Use Spotlight)

And type in "Open" then Drag Steam into terminal, Press spacebar then type "--Args -tcp"

If you do all of this, It SHOULD work, Also Steam for mac is not that great on a Laptop if thats what your using, Its best on an nVida Graphics Carded iMac, (All new iMacs have nVida's and all Mac Laptops have whats called a GMA which sucks at playing Steamgames)

I hoped this help, If it didn't Just wait for the Servers to calm down.

Guys. All the problem is that this software is new to Macs. I've used Bootcamp through mac so none of the drivers or hardware is a problem. The engine had to be modified quite a bit to run on macs so the performance is a little bit low.

But this problem has nothing to do with the OS.

Go into your preferences, set your Network Connection to something very high

Also set your location to wherever you are.

If that doesn't work, try what PSP has.

Also, adding on to what he said, if your mac is that old that it doesn't come with a Nvidia graphics card, don't even bother playing. It's just like Windows where you wouldn't try to play on a 98.

How many times do I have to tell everyone not to write my name "PSP" and just do "Psp"?
Apparently Alot

ONTOPIC: Bootcamp uses Virtual Graphic software, Making Steam RUN FINE. So does all Windows emulators/WINE (Wine Is Not A Emulator) VMWare, Paraells, VirtualBox, Etc.

Also "Also, adding on to what he said, if your mac is that old that it doesn't come with a Nvidia graphics card, don't even bother playing. It's just like Windows where you wouldn't try to play on a 98." Im actully running GMA Graphics card, And it runs Nice, And Smooth, Know how? If you have Quicktime Pro, Add this Launch code into Steam Games Launch Options "-Novid" Novid uses Quicktime to play the games. Quicktime has a Hardware...Lets call it an Adjuster...So it Adjusts to your hardware settings, Making steam run, Pretty fine.

Also "In a review published in May 2008, the GMA X4500 showed a superior game performance to the lowest-end 1-year-older GeForce 8400M graphics card, while losing ..."(Wikipedia Quote)....Hmm... superior game Preformance...My GMA isn't the only Great one! (Im using the GMA X3100)

Thanks for the more possitive feedback. I'll try some of these methods later.

Can't right click -We can, genius. You change the properties.
Ruined TF2 -Oh no, more people! And some don't really know how to play, because they just got it! OH GOD!
Can't run most games - Can't run some games, and those will be coming to Mac within the next few months.

Wincigarette...

Squiggles isn't a wincigarette, he's just a cigarette. Always has been, always will.
