Author Topic: Anyone think $150 for a surround sound headset is too much?  (Read 3417 times)

So recently, I've been looking around for a surround sound headset I can use with my 360/DirecTV Box and came across this. So I watch reviews and look at the specs, then I come across the price of the thing, which is $150.

So I look around at real surround sound systems, and the cheapest one I could find was $400. So, it's either this or save up for about two years to get a real surround sound system, which I'm not willing to do.

So, does it seem like a waste/too much to pay for a surround sound headset? Just wanting opinions on the price.

A surround sound headset?
You mean a pair of (stereo) ear buds you can get a wal-mart for 15$?

No. Surround sound, meaning more than one speaker in each ear cup. Also, ear buds suck rooster, and can be bought for less than a dollar.

Wait, so a DirecTV box is like T.V. right?
How many TV programs (or even games, etc.) are gonna be getting the most likely expensive recording equipment to record sound in that manner.

Most of the shows I watch have surround sound (CSI, King of the Hill, etc)

Also, most of my DVDs have surround sound, too.

I'd mostly be getting this for my 360/Original Xbox, though. And all my 360 games and most my xbox games have surround sound support.

Wow, surround sound cartoons.
Are you trying to troll me or something? You're acting like kind of a richard.

Personally I wouldn't waste my money buying a frugal headset :P

I would test it out before you buy it if you are actually going to. Sometimes headsets are just too damn hurtful to your ears D:

They had a test pair at gamestop (forget yeah, getting lice from the employees) and it sounded great. And it fit like a glove, too.

No, I'm not trolling.
Though I was kinda surprised that of all things a cartoon has sound that you need to get a 150$+ system to fully hear with it.
Just seems kinda silly when you compare it to the classics.

Surround sound with animated stuff is easy, just add a sound effect/voice track to one of the surround sound channels and you've got a voice/sound from beind/infront/front left/etc. So if it's that easy, why not add it for the hell of it and let the people who payed for a surround sound system get surround sound?

I'm not saying I'd buy a $150 headset just to hear hank hill say "I'm gonna kick your ass" and hear it like it's coming from infront of me, but I would use it for that.

Bahaha I spent $320 on my most recent 'phones, don't think $150 is too much.
Do what you think is right.

gonna kick your ass" and hear it like it's coming from infront of me
That would be kinda awesome.

But if you're just adding an effect, then it's not going to be the same. Like if a sound is coming from the back of a scene of a movie, and you just "add an effect" then it might not end up sounding like it's coming in back of you on your sound system. I'm pretty sure you need special recording equipment to accurately get the direction along with the volume, pitch, and effect of all the sounds.

kinda seems like you'd be making surround sound for itself.

I wouldn't buy a special system that's that good, but I can get why someone would.
