Author Topic: BlockLand: 15 things to know. guide for new people (constantly updated)  (Read 5906 times)

Welcome Blockheads! This is a guide I made to get you started in the forums, and Ingmar. This is just a good way to start; it is not the only, nor the best (or worst). These are things you will learn on your own, so “Spoiler Alert” I guess. So here it is:

1.   First of all, you should read this.

2.   If you have not bought Blockland at this point, buy it. It has extremely good replay value, and it is REALLY cheap when you play for more than a year. You will.

3.   You are not, right now, a skilled builder. Don't get me wrong, you will, I bet my ass on it, but give yourself time. Here are some tips regarding this:

•   Build in a demo kind of way, with limited bricks, but not too often. The lack of brick makes you focus more on the detail, giving you an edge.
•   Right now; DO NOT spend allot of time looking at other people's builds, if you see something like The Faceship at this point, you can diminish yourself as a builder.
•   You have talent at this point, but you may not notice. When I started playing this game (as well as many other players), I was considered good for a starter, but I thought I was not good enough and worried too much.
•   Post your first completed build as such, if you wish. Maybe even the second one. But don't go overboard. Spend time on your builds, post when you feel OK, or even proud about them.
•   “perfection does not come when there is no more to add, but when there is nothing more to take away”

4.   Make friends, they will help you, you will help them.  They make Blockland several times more fun, and collab builds can be less stressful.. to  start making friend, just pop in some random server and say “hi”. :P

5.   Listen to music. When you listen to music, you get bored less easily, and keeps you busy when you are brain-farting ^^

6.   Learning to event can be fun AND easy to learn, do it; it will make your builds more interactive. Advanced eventers are respected and can get access to clans, without worrying much on design.

7.   Badspot is the creator of Blockland. hes juts a normal guy, wit allot of work. don't criticise his work, we all love it ^^. go to his sever, its one of the few servers which are good for building AND meeting random strangers!

8.   Trolls WILL troll. Even when negative posts are rejected by most blocklanders, negative people, or negative elements in a post will ALWAYS be present. Here are some tips on trolls:

•   Trolling is not pointing out the bad stuff. It is pointing out the bad stuff, and not giving either a solution or a suggestion to make that problem better. Doing any two of these is called constructive criticism.
•   Use correct spelling please, Do Not Talk Like This, 7h3is, 0r tis pLiz. If you are doing it just for a laugh, let us know, point it out; [1337]liek theis pliez[/1337].
•   Ignore trolls, unless they have a REALLY good point, in that case, he/she just can't help being that way.

9.   Thing we will most probably not tolerate:

•   Racism, there is no valid scientific argument that supports ANY kind of racism. so SFTFU and no cookies for Riddler
•   loveism, we HAVE, ARE, and WILL keep having respect towards women, gays, lesbians, and you call it. This is a friendly game, with friendly people. [we might call you gay, but if you show yourself as one, you will be accepted, never the less.]
•   Constant stuff. If you do not want to improve your building skills, and still build as if your first day 3 years into the game, do not brag about it.
•   And all the things signaled as wrong in the rules.

10.   Please, please, write correctly, there is a spell checker, word, and English classes. I am Mexican and use Word for my constant spelling mistakes.

11.   When you are ready, join a clan. Browse them, select one, make an app. Clan tags earn you respect, and clans are a fun and easy [once you get in] way to meet friends and gain building experience.

12.   Be mature. We are mostly “mature people” [ : P ]. But: Be immature. Just chose correctly when. We all can have fun like 1 year olds with a rattle, at the right time.

13.   Nobody cares, well most of us don't. Post your topics in the right section, talk to the people who care most, and you will not be Trollbait.

14.   The art of making add-ons, prints and decals, is a great mystery, only handled by the chosen few. If you know how to script, pack, and model, you are welcome to make as much (good) add-ons as you wish!

15.   Most important of all: Have Fun!! And again, welcome to Blockland.

7.   Badspot is the creator of Blockland. He is smarter, more experienced, and more respected that almost every, if not every, player in Blockland. Do not address him unless you completely need it, thou he is comprehensive, he can get frustrated easily due to the lack of knowledge we posses :P [loljk, he’s just really busy]. Oh, do not argue with him, he is right 99.99% percent of the time.

Wrong. He is right quite occasionally, but other times he's completely wrong. He isn't some sort of god, he's just a normal person like everyone else.

14.   The art of making add-ons is a great mystery, only handled by the chosen few. If you know how to script, and model, you are welcome to make as much (good) add-ons as you wish!

What about making/packaging Decals and Faces? Not everybody knows how to do that.

9.   Thing we will most probably not tolerate:

•   Racisms, there is no valid scientific argument that suports ANY kind of racism. so SFTFU and no cookies for Riddler
•   loveism, we HAVE, ARE, and WILL keep having respect towards women, gays, lesbians, and you call it. This is a friendly game, with friendly people.
•   Constant stuff. If you do not want to improve your building skills, and still build as if your first day 3 years into the game, do not brag about it.
•   And all the things signaled as wrong in the rules.
This is the only major problem I found with this list  :cookieMonster:

Oh my god, he's mexican!!

If only this was true...

I posted a comment on how to behave or how the Forums work some time back.
It had things that came only from opinion, so it's views are open to interpretation.
Don't take what I said as pure fact, since I know that I now have slight disagreements with it now and that things have changed since then, so little bits don't quite make sense.

Thanks! People are nice around here! :D
The people around here usually are, as long as you aren't the sort of person who 'Trolls' or just acts like an absolute idiot.

A few things you may wish to know about;

Swearing

Another thing you may wish to know, if you don't allready, is that the people on Blockland swear, usually a lot. Don't feel pressured to swear if you don't wish to, but other people will do so, so just a note if you aren't necesarilly 'fine' with swearing.

Racism

You will quite easily find racism upon these forums, just as it is the same on the majority of the internet. As with swearing, you may not agree with racism (Especially if it is against people of the same race as you) but all you simply need do, is shrug it off.

Drama
On the Blockland Forums, there is a section dedicated to Drama. In Drama, people rant about people who have angered them in-game and on the forums. It can often get rather 'hot' in Drama. With people swearing, and constant arguing, the place can be very confusing. If you aren't the sort of person who likes to watch complete strangers argue about un-important things, then i wouldn't really suggest going there. However, the Drama area does supply some good times, lot's of laughs, and the riddance of a few 'Un-needed' members. So, check it out if you want, but be careful, as this is where most of the Swearing and Racism takes place.

Starting a Topic
Allways, allways, start a topic in the right place. No one wants to see you asking asking for a weapon in the Add-Ons section. 'Suggestions and Requests' in the Suggestions and Requests area, 'Help' in the Help area, etc.etc...
Another note about this is Drama. Recently things were changed in Drama. Starting a Topic can be a risky thing today, especially if you are actually the one in the wrong. Topics posted in Drama can not be locked. So, if you wrongly accuse someone, and it back-fires, it shall be open for people to comment on.

Emotes
 :cookie: :cookieMonster: :panda:
These are the things to avoid. No-one minds if you use the CookieMonster once in a while to express a joke, but over-using them will annoy people. When asking for something, or thanking someone, dont say;
Quote
Thnk U!!11!!1 I gIve U  :cookie: :cookie: :cookie:
This will instantly lose most respect for you.

Bumps
When someone post's a topic, they will be at the top of the 'Topic List' in the area they were placed. As someone posts in a topic, that topic is instantly moved to the top of the list, therefore moving other ones down. If someone post's a topic, and it ends up near the bottom of the first page, or even on the second page, and someone posts in it, it will be moved to the top of the first page. This is called a Bump. The further down the list, the bigger the bump. Big bumps are annoying, especially if the Topic has Died (Reaching far down the list) or if the purposte of the topic, was completed. Again, big pointless bumps are not wanted, and will lose you respect.

ROBLOX
Many people on these forums do not like ROBLOX. These people have no reason for this, other than jumping on the 'bandwagon' to try and become popular. It doesn't work. Most people don't dislike ROBLOX as a game, but the players instead.(However there are people who dislike ROBLOX because of the actual game, but don't blame the game in general for it's bad members) This is mainly because there are certain members who insist on being rivals with Blockland. Similar there are people on Blockland who insist on rivalling ROBLOX. ROBLOX recently set up some 'thing' where members get points or whatever, for posting links to ROBLOX. Blockland got loads of these people spamming us with Links, so Badspot (The creator and Moderator of Blockland and it's Forums) Set it up so that posting a link to ROBLOX gave the person a ban. So don't link to ROBLOX, at all.

That's just about it for what i can think of, so, have fun, and obey the rules. And I hope the hints help. Enjoy your time.

Notably, I spelt Roblox as ROBLOX. You don't have to do that. I'm not entirely sure if the banning for linking to Roblox still exists or not.
Also, although I said most people don't like Roblox for no reason other than it's members, I do respect the fact that people also don't like Roblox because of it's gameplay. As I said, I was still pretty much new when I posted the above, and I only got my facts from what I saw on the Forums, and since the Forums only show the majority of stuff usually, It's hard to see the people who have the more unique views.
Anyway, that's my out-dated not entirely correct view of the Forum's un-official rules, or guide to staying alive.

It does, my brother was banned for posting an image link from it.

This looks good, and kudos on spending the time to type it up. It is however, missing a few good points. You should combine yours and sir dooble's to create an ultimate guide for recently joined players.

•   Build in the demo, but not too often. The lack of brick makes you focus more on the detail, giving you an edge.

The lack of bricks leads to less detail...You can't build really well with 150 bricks. A detailed cube - sure

corrected, thanks.

thank you. i tried to make a started guide which helps most of the new players, because every player is different

What about making/packaging Decals and Faces? Not everybody knows how to do that.

Or make maps? I can do everything but make add-ons... I can make maps, faces, decals, prints, oh wait... I cant make music, I dont have the program on my computer, but I know how ^.^, also I am an extremely good eventer... I know like every single event. variables, relay, all that
Code: [Select]
self ,
Code: [Select]
player ,
Code: [Select]
clientetc. stuff...

I just suck at making models, and I am 95% horrible at scripting (I made my own mod of unlimited mining, with moar ores)
