Building a portable tennisball cannon

Well, I have no clue about how I build one of these, so I'm asking for help from my favorite forum :3

I'm on a fairly tight budget, so I can't afford rockets or any expensive stuff. And I'd like it to be hand held, around the length of a shotgun, and fairly wide.

Spring or compressed air?
Compress is more expensive, but easier.
Spring, will take a more complex design, but is worth it.

I remember I would soak a tennis ball in gasoline, and launch it through a fire, at each others back yard, but ever since I moved, are neighborhood is alot more strict
so I can't do any fun stuff.

Your main power source should be hair spray, going off a book I have. You can use a spark thing to set off the spray in a chamber, and in place of a potato, you can have your tennisball which should have a snug fit in the pipe. You should buy the book 'Backyard Ballistics' as it has many good projects that serve good as examples too.

Yes this is another option, but don't blow your self up.
You can achieve this, by buying those old Nerf guns, that shoot balls (Stfu)
It will take some modifications,but yeah....

Yes this is another option, but don't blow your self up.

The way it works is you can put a cap on the hairspray chamber, and the sparking mechanism basically would be a button or something. Of course, you can get rid of the spark mechanism by using a small hole instead, and light it through there.
