Space Project
I decided after seeing many artists' concepts of space, whether of Earth and it's moon or a nebula in the deeps of the galaxy, to work on a set of images depicting space.

I recognize that I quite frankly suck at this, but I would like some constructive criticism on my progress. I will try to do 1-2 a day that work on the previous days criticism, or on a concept that I haven't yet tried.

I'll label each image with what it is and what style I was working on. Also, I will try to work on a topic title image with some of my learned styles.

This was one of my first tries, and it was just a simplistic black background with white noise added to it, and a planet made out of a black and blue gradient. I added a moon with the same process as the planet, then used slightly opaque gradients over the planet to simulate atmosphere.

7-11-10
This was basically the same as the first one, but it tested out the star gradient and showed somewhat flare size differential. I also used a mixed series of green, blue, and brown gradients on the planet to add a less bright texture.

7-11-10
This was somewhat a more advanced use of gradients to create the large gas giant in the foreground. The blue-ish moon had the same process as the mixed gradient planet above, yet retains no atmosphere. I also experimented with a smaller flare size to attempt to show the proximity of the star from the scene.

The edge of the gas giant looks to clean cut.

Great work otherwise.

Also, needs some lovey atmospheres.

Yeah, I see that now. I knew there was something strange going on, I just couldn't put my finger on it. Suggestions on how to fix it?

Ya.

I did a quick google search and came up with this:

I noticed the way the artist used blur to simulate light, that was interesting. Furthermore the gas giant has a sort of gradient halo around it. Also softening the edges couldn't hurt.

Oh hey, thanks Wizard.

That is actually the basic same concept, I also think I should distort the lines of gradient making up the gas giant to show imperfections. Cool though, thanks.

As promised, I created another one. I worked on creating a more distorted gas giant, and a better star. I also added the bright glow and the halo to the gas giant.

Once again, I experimented with a more detailed flare for the star, and I distorted the gas giant to appear more realistic. I also worked on the glow and halo. Also, now that I look at it, the 2 protruding solar flares coming off the sun should not end so abruptly.

The stars glow is intresting, it looks odd though... I dont think the flare should just end like that, but fade off instead :o

The gas giant could use a little less blur (keep experimenting 'till you get the amount right) and the sun's flare shouldn't end abruptly and the circular thing around it shouldn't either.

Oh and the giant curves weird at the bottom, a circle that size wouldn't do that.

I meant the glowing circle around the star, it just stops it doesnt fade away completely

Ok, thanks for the critiques. I'll probably try something like it again tomorrow.

I really like your artwork, by the way, I'm not trying to be rude.

I want to try my hand at this, but I don't want to post my work in your topic. :C

these need a lot of work, try checking out some tutorials.
