I usually have a random pool start to run before I get to bed, and then in the morning I usually have a single dominant species with slight variations, but a steady food supply.

but no matter how many times i tweaked the species, the entire race wandred to the top of the screen, away from food

though anyone who expected aliens to look anything like us is pretty hopeless anyways.
