Problem with extruding

I am trying to make sort of a clock type thing. I already made faces and I am left with a 2d circle. I tried extruding it on the x-axis but it just moves the circle, it doesn't move it out to make it 3d. Please help.

You need to extrude the faces, not the verteces.
