Stabbing the ice caused immense pressure to continuously build inside it, then a little bit later,
POW.
Happened to my science teacher. He was holding a glass pane when he dropped it on the edge of a brick, put it didn't break, just a small crack on it.

One hour later, SMASH.
He had no idea what happened, until he figured it out later.

Seeing as how I just took it off of a site and it seemed like more trouble then it was worth to convert it...

My simple idea of why this happened:
Water expands when you freeze it
Glass contracts when you freeze it
Fork makes pressure drop
Pressure drop makes waves that make the ice shatter

It's sorta like an earthquake
