It would be "are", if there was an "s" at the end of "generation."
Er, nope. Look it up. A generation refers to multiple people - "is" is singular and "handicaps" is plural. Back to English class for you - although you're in Alabama so I'm guessing it won't help much.
"Our generations" would be equally incorrect if he's referring to a single age group (which he is) because they all belong to one generation.
