Author Topic: Are there noticable performance differences between a dedi server and a normal  (Read 513 times)

I'm having trouble with hosting a server, I just wanted some information. I started pondering this recently and I wasn't sure who to ask or what to ask specifically.
-Is there a performance difference between the two?
-If so how big of a difference?
-I'm asking for performance wise, not usage wise. Example: using a dedi to host a city RP or etc

My apologies, very bad typo.

I'm NOT having trouble with hosting a server, I just wanted some info.

Uhhh... ah well...

If you don't want to host a server that sucks up too many CPU Usage (which affects performance), host a dedicated.

Since Blockland (CLIENT) + Server hosting isn't so good since it has the server AND Blockland running.
And you don't need Blockland running if you're running a dedi so yeah.
* Gragoyle gets shot

But I highly recommend you to use another computer to host the server.

You misinterpret my question, sorry wasn't being specific enough I guess. I mean the performance of the server, I guess what I am trying to say is what the server can handle before it all goes to hell so-to-speak. (Not having to do with network settings)  For your trouble:  :cookie:

Yummy, cookies! :cookieMonster:
Thanks

Also, what the server can handle is completely dependant on your connection (mostly upload speed I think) and computer performance. Or I could be speaking bullstuff.

Hell, I have no clue, I don't know what your system specs and connection speeds are. You gotta try it for yourself. Personally I could play TF2 and host a Blockland dedicated server at the same time with no problems for me and the players in my server.

Were getting somewhere now. What im asking is if it was a side-by-side comparison which would lag less: Me hosting a server with 12 people, or me joined to my dedicated server with 12 people.

You have more control in a dedicated server.
There are cool commands like talk("phrase goes here"); that allows you to speak as the console.
It's fun to mess with. :cookieMonster:
announce("phrase goes here"); is something similiar, except you talk with yellow text with no nickname.
You do those commands with the dedicated server console.

Only problem is that to kick/ban someone, you HAVE to be IN the server. For some reason you can't kick/ban from dedi's console.

On a Listen server (hosting a game by pressing Start Game > Internet > Start), you would need to be on Blockland all the time to keep hosting it.

Sorry double toast, but my engineer wanted more toasters because his toast dispenser was sapped by a french toast called Spy there's no EDIT button.

Also, dedi lags less for the clients and the host.
The end.

Thank you. Just so you know those commands you are talking about can be done in a hosted server also. I can give you a list if you want them, I have compiled it over 4 weeks of messing around with the console.
