Author Topic: The internet: good or bad?  (Read 1577 times)

The internet is a pretty loving crazy place. There is no disputing that the internet has had a massive impact on almost every facet of our lives, but the only question is, is it a good impact or a bad one?

Both sides could easily be argued. The internet provides a cheap, easy, efficient, fast and reliable way to communicate with, for all intents and purposes, anyone that uses the internet. Sites like Wikipedia provide access to the collective knowledge of the world. The internet benefits so many facets of our lives, including communication, discussion, access to entertainment and information, and commerce. The internet allows small small business, entrepreneurs, merchants and someone just wanting to sell something to have access to a global market.

Obviously the internet has nearly innumerable benefits, but what about some of the negative side effects?

The internet and digital communication in general are directly responsible for social interaction between kids migrating from either face to face conversations or over the phone conversation, to almost exclusive texting, Facebooking, etc. The internet also has crippled our ability to have a past that we can escape. Any information we post to the internet is hard to delete in its entirety, and incriminating information may prevent you from getting a job or any other variety of consequences. When all is said and done, our generation is going to be very very different than our parent's generation or their parent's generation for the simple reason that the social and cultural landscape has been completely different as we grow up. Think about it, in 30-40 years, we're going to have a president that probably grew up saying "lol".

So. All things considered (if that's possible) do you think the world and the people that live in it is a better place because of the internet?

What did you expect?  A straight answer?
I expected someone to not be an idiot on a thread to discuss a very serious question. I was on the fence, but now I vote no.

The internet sucks.

It is a very serious question, but it is not ready to really answer.

The opinions on the internet really overwhelm people.  I prefer to not give out alot of my opinions c:

Figuring you have been in lots of arguments.

The internet is a tool, like many things within life. You can't claim it to be either "good" or "bad", in my opinion, just as you can't claim a hammer to be good or bad. Such is determined by how it is used, by what hands it is used, and how one uses what others construct within it. It is a gateway where both good and bad can pass through.

God damn it Mage, let other people be smart :c
I'll take that as a compliment. :3

As long as there is school kids will have face to face conversation.

Perhaps I didn't phrase the question right. I'm not talking if the internet is fundamentally good or bad, I'm asking if you think, thusfar, if it's had an overall positive or negative impact on the world, society, cultures, etc.

Which is a perfectly fair and answerable question. Using your example I could say "Yes I think the hammer has had an overall positive impact on the world since its invention".

Yeah, you can have 2nails1hammer or you can have 2guys1hammer.

The internet sucks.

It does more good than bad, I dont even see much negativity in it unless you over use it, which is a personal issue.

Tom

You would be stupid to think the internet has had a negative impact.
