How do I take a picture of chat?

So I need help taking screenshots/pictures of the chat/irc etc... Any tips/help I would really appreciate it.
Some people told me to use "PrtScrn" but everytime I press CTRL + V nothing shows up in the Paint program.
Others said it's a specific screenshot that takes pictures of chat. But I wasn't sure and I would like some help
please.

In game is shift+p. IRC, I think it'd be prt screen, then copy onto paintt, then select the stuff you need, copy, undo, paste, then make it so the size is about the size of the image.

Prt Scrn + ctrl V should work, and there really isn't another method.
