What is this book series

I forgot the name of it but it was about this weird world where like these dudes would fuse their shadows with monsters they captured from some alternate reality type thing and the dudes had these rings that could shoot out beams of light and there's his weird tribe of barbarian type people who reject selling your shadow and such and thus live in the wastelands under where the people with the light rings are. And the main character fails at the light ring stuff and gets this thunder cloud god thing for his shadow and teams up with a girl from the barbarian peoples to do some important quest stuff.

Does anyone remember reading this sorta thing ever? I know I read it when I was very young but forgot about it until now.

stuff they went looking for a Codex or something, and the only other thing I remember is the barbarian girl did something dumb so she had to stand naked on her boat to humiliate herself because I was like 10 and anything containing even text-based nudity was lolzorz

Also they were on towers in one of the books, and there was some sort of portal? It's so fuzzy I can barely remember

EDIT:  LOL, your description of these books reminds me of Dreamkeepers, but that's a series of graphic novels that started in 2006.... :(
