The family lap top is having a few issues, to say the least.  Today it just turns on, goes into windows and that's just about it.  When it goes into windows, it just gives a few artifacts, then the screen just goes blank.  Would I be correct in saying that the GPU is dying/dead?

Yeah and the magical touch-sensitive volume control bar just so happens to lag the sound card. Great features you've got going on there. ;D
