Author Topic: The Truth Behind IdSoftware And 3D Realms  (Read 1510 times)

Now I've heard that IdSoftware stole 3D Realm's game engine and I've heard 3D Realms stole IdSoftware's game engine.

Well here's the truth.

Now basicly 3D Realms made a deal with IdSoftware to make Wolfenstien and was funded and published by Apogee Software. The deal really isn't clear but I don't think it had anything to do with the game engine. Basicly Wolfenstien used its own game engine known as the well, Wolfenstien Engine. Then DooM and DooM II came out and used a new engine called id Tech 1 that was developed by IdSoftware. Then in 1995 Wolfenstien became OPEN SOURCE. Duke Nukem was released in 1996! Coincidence!? I think not! Basicly Duke Nukem 3D uses something called the Build Engine which highly compares to id Tech 1. They did make some improvements compared to id Tech 1 but not much. So who really stole who's engine? Well my opinion stays strong espicially after these facts. 3D Realms copied IdSoftware's engine.

What do you think?
Also keep the arguements clean and don't turn this into a flame war. But just in case...

How is it stealing when it's open source?

I dont know what either of these are.

How is it stealing when it's open source?

Not stealing. Just copying a game engine and barely making any changes.

Like BC and RTB? Except not a game engine.

THE TRUTH WILL BE REVEALED!

All I can say is,

GOVERNMENT CONSPIRACY!

You had enough weed bro.

Well, since everyone is voting for government conspiracy in the poll...

This is all general information. Duke3D's Build engine was based off of the DOOM Engine, not the Wolf engine. There's no way in HELL the Wolf engine could support all of the advances Duke3D had, the technology was leaps ahead. Hell, Wolf3D couldn't even render floor textures and the walls were pseudo-3D. In any case, 3D Realms didn't steal the engine.

Congrats on making a thread based on a complete lack of accurate information, internet detective.

Wolfenstien's engine had lots of potential. id Tech 1 was built off of the Wolfenstien engine so I'm pretty sure 3D Realms did the same thing. Also this is obviously not general information since fanboys always say IdSoftware copied 3D Realms.
