Wolfenstien's engine had lots of potential. id Tech 1 was built off of the Wolfenstien engine so I'm pretty sure 3D Realms. Also this is obviously not common language because fanboys are always saying idSoftware copied 3D Realms.
I've literally never heard that my entire life. Are you having arguments with teenagers in 1998?

In any case, the Wolf engine was extremely limited in potential due to how simplistic it was (reasons I said above). In-fact, the DOOM engine was almost entirely redesigned. Anyway, it's still a well-known factoid that Duke3D was built on an improved DOOM engine. if it isn't blatantly obvious just by how similar the games look, you could probably find a ton of the same code in the WAD files.

I see your point. Also I edited my thing. I found lots of grammar issues in that. Second of all, was IdSoftware marketing id Tech 1? How did 3D Realms get their hands on it?

Actually scratch that. How did every loving single game company get their hands on it? I don't ever remember DooM being open source.

You know, I'm not exactly sure, but it might simply be that some smart minds over at 3D Realms figured out how it worked or backward engineered it and modified it enough to avoid any sort of lawsuit, OR they had a deal with id. In any case, I can't find any evidence of legal disputes or anything actually connecting the two games, but I'd most likely go with my first point up there about the minds at 3D Realms.

Also DOOM has almost always been open source, in a way. The WAD file format for DOOM allowed for easy modding and a modular system.

Well if those starfishs really did replicate the engine, I don't feel bad that their company went to stuff after "Duke Nukem Forever".

You should just let them do their business among themselves.

It's fine if it doesn't hurt anyone.  :cookieMonster:

Also wad files are just data files. It doesn't really contain any base code or the engine. It's just for maps, sounds, visuals, etc.

Also what business?
3D Realms doesn't even actually exist anymore and IdSoftware sold out to Bethesda Softworks. Bethesda Softworks, those bastards.

Duke 3D was almost as revolutionary as DOOM. It vastly improved on the engine, allowing many things that weren't possible using id Tech 1. 3D Realms weren't starfishs by any means, I don't think. I mean, that's pure business right there; Taking an idea and improving on it. Without it, there'd be no real progress.

Good point. I guess it even happens today. That and everybody using Unreal Engine. That's starting to get annoying.

Edit: Also they didn't make that many improvements. They only added trilinear filtering so you can look up and down, slopes, and fake sectors.

They also added mirrors, interactive objects, "npcs", breakable objects, more advanced ai, false walls and fire, for example.

NPCS and fire don't count since they're not part of the engine. I think breakable objects aren't part of the engine either and define interactive objects?

Do you have any idea how engines work? Of course they're part of the engine, otherwise they would not exist.

No. It's just an addition to the engine. I could easily add npcs and breakable objects. Hell I'm making a DooM II mod right now. :/

Holy stuff I just realized breakable objects were already existent in DOOM and I don't even know why I said "NPC". I'm way too tired to argue tonight.
