Because now it's to the point where it's an unconscious habit and people use it often unintentionally. It's hard to break a habit when you don't even notice you're doing it.

What about when it was used to be used as a term for happy or colorful? Or when "queer" was used as a term for odd or out of place? It was the same way then. Maybe, in the future, "Tree" will be used as an insult and "gay" will refer to a hat. :o

That's why I said when they were used under their original definition. Using the word "gay" in the vein of moronic  or even in the vein of homoloveual 9i.e. Saying to mean those terms, respectively) is like using slang. It may be a part of the language, but it can and may eventually change. But it won't change if no one even tries to change it. :o
