Author Topic: Why do people consider non-baseplate builds spam?  (Read 4845 times)

Recently, I've noticed quite a few servers banning builds not on baseplates, assuming it's always spam. Some servers even have something set to autoclear any brick not built on a baseplate. A more common reasoning is saying not building on baseplates causes lag. Seeing if this was true, I decided to run a little test. No screenshots, I'm afraid, since Blockland crashes when I try to take a HUD one and my FPS cuts in half when I use the Mac's built-in one. Distance from tests is 16 blocks away each time.
Building a 16x16x10 box of 1x1s with no roof
FPS with a baseplate:
About 148, with a bit of going to 147.6 or so.
FPS without a baseplate:
142, with more fluctuation than the last test. Goes to 140.5 at the lowest, and 143 at the highest.
It seems there is a small FPS difference, but doing the math, not using baseplates causes about a 1 fps drop every 426 bricks. For a server of, let's say 40000 blocks, if nobody used baseplates, that would be a 93 FPS difference while running a non-dedicated server. 40,000 is generally an amount of bricks seen on a freebuild that's been up for a few days, so not using baseplates doesn't cause a significant enough amount of lag to justify deleting every build that doesn't use a baseplate.
(Note: My test was in no way perfect, so these figures are probably completely wrong. If you want to do a better test, please do.)
Anyways, this thread is in drama so you can discuss bitch about whether or not not using a baseplate is considered spam.

Because it has to be on a baseplate, get used to it.

Because it has to be on a baseplate, get used to it.
But why? What if I want to build something circular and don't want a random square below it making it look bad? Making the baseplate invisible has it floating a bit and screws up any floors you want to add.

You're question is irrelevant, its like asking why the modern world is flat.

...
Please explain what you meant by that. If an argument is based on opinion, saying "just because" is a lazy way of trying to win.

The Earth is obviously flat, whats wrong with you?

Personally, I disable script_clearspam. People just put their spam on a baseplate.

I think it helps with clean up and duplicating/alligning builds. So as a rule, build on a baseplate. It's pretty much become a standard.

I can understand preferring to build on a baseplate, and with citybuilds, yeah, but for just random freebuilds, why try to restrict creativity? Confining builds to a baseplate forces them to be square or look off.

Bingo!

Have you ever tried to wand and/or hammer 100+ of someone else's non-baseplate bricks in order to save certain good builds?

In the old days admins had to delete spam by hand, we didn't have scripts to do it for us and as a result the baseplates rule evolved and stayed around like a stubborn mule.
Basically stop complaining and think of a creative way to build a circular thing on a baseplate.

Also, you didn't take any count of latency (net) lag in those tests which is what most people look out for.

Just clear that user's bricks. If they spammed one thing, it's not very likely that they built anything worthwhile on the server.

It's not that simple.

Now stop being a stubborn prick and learn to cope like everyone else does

Yes. stuntman021, lock this topic. It's worthless and it's true. Non-Baseplate builds ARE spam. If you don't like that baseplate under it, just wrench it, turn collision, raycasting and rendering off.
If you don't like it that way either, please make your own server and don't enable script_clearspam.
If you don't want to host anything, stop complaining.
Actually, stop complaining either way.

ITS A BASEPLATE
ON A BASEPLATE

Yes. stuntman021, lock this topic.
Can't do that.

Also, I think this rule stops people from placing, say one brick just to get a weapon or a vehicle, so that the server the rule applies to doesn't get littered with random vehicle spawns and 1x1 bricks.
