God forbid you pirate something with a proxy, or make up a new type of movie file format to share files with, what happens then?

(Not that I'm saying I've pirated anything.)

My guess is that they'll find some way to bypass proxies, which is kind of ironic, because that's exactly what proxies do, they bypass stuff. So they'd essentially be figuring out a way to bypass the bypass.

I tryed doing the reload google search thing.
I got to 75 reloads on that page, but had to stop, I'm on metered bandwidth, and it was using 100kb a reload.

I can only imagine how people would react when they begin monitoring sites like 4chan and Encyclopedia Dramatica. :o

This makes me sad :[
:c

I wouldn't worry too much about it. It will probably be jumped upon with numerous loopholes, repeals, and petitions that it will hardly be effective. And if all else fail, everyone could just move to Italy. :o

Same, more or less. My dad came upstairs and asked me to stop hogging the bandwidth.

I hope whoever wants this ACTA crap is killed in the most painful way possible.

Don't most people have good internet these days?

Most of the whining about this is just about being able to look at your stuff.  It doesn't mean that the government will look at what sites you visit, but it means that they can look at what sites you visit.  My understanding is that it's like someone going into your home and looking at your history because they got a tip that you had child research.  To my understanding, it's basically "if you're doing stupid stuff, the government can watch and promptly arrest you."  What else does this do?  Is it just that the government could possibly look at your history/chatlogs/whatever?

I'm not really sure what you mean by "bypass proxies".
A proxy completely hides your IP address and replaces it with something completely different, entirely hiding the old IP.
There's no real 'bypass' possible?

and about the +18 agreement whenever us below 18 enter a research site?
if thats an offense then imagine hundreds of minors going to juvinile

This is the dumbest thing I've ever seen in an attempt of anti-piracy. Not only does it violate your privacy but it means that if the government suspects you of holding illegally downloaded content on your hard drive, then they have the automatic right to confiscate your computer.

It's not like the government will be looking at you through your webcam to determine your age.  The government simply doesn't have the time to do that for all users of the internet.

Isn't the internet something made by businesses, and not owned by the government, much less anyone?

It's more than that. It's the fact that this will infringe on every human's basic right to privacy. The government currently has no right to look into what we're doing on the Internet, whether legal or not, and so they're justifying their cause with "we're only looking to make sure you're not downloading anything illegal." While this is a good thing, because it should greatly decrease piracy rates, it means that they look into everyone's Internet activity, whether they're performing illegal actions or not.

It's like wire tapping, only on the Internet.

I know how proxies work, I just didn't say that correctly. What I was trying to say is that they'll find some way to make proxies illegal, and some way to prevent loads of proxies from being created in the first place.

Not to mention putting you in prison and/or hitting you up with massive fines.
